Progressive Muscle Relaxation

Published on 24 February 2026 at 14:21

Progressive Muscle Relaxation is a gentle and effective way to give your body and mind a true pause. By slowly tensing and releasing different muscle groups, you learn to recognise where stress is held and allow it to soften. Many people notice a sense of calm, lightness, and greater connection with themselves after only a few minutes.

For carers, this means having a reliable way to step out of constant alertness, regain energy, and feel more grounded in everyday life.

Why it matters for carers

Caring for someone living with dementia can be deeply meaningful, but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding. When stress becomes the background of daily life, it is easy to lose sight of your own needs. PMR offers you a structured and supportive way to release tension, build resilience, and restore a sense of control.

As your body learns to relax more easily, many carers experience:

  • A calmer baseline throughout the day

  • More patience and emotional balance

  • Increased energy and mental clarity

  • Increased life satisfaction
  • Greater confidence in their caring role

A gradual and achievable approach

You will be guided step by step over six weekly sessions. We begin with just a few minutes of daily practice and gently build up to around 20 minutes, making the process realistic and sustainable. This progressive structure helps you find a rhythm that fits into your life without adding pressure.
